Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Are the bees aggressive?

A: Not the ones we bring. We use a gentle breed of honey bee specifically selected for their calm temperament and suitability for residential areas. They’re focused on foraging flowers and building their hive — not on bothering you or your family. That said, any honey bee will defend its home if it feels threatened. We place hives thoughtfully and provide clear guidance on simple habits (like not standing directly in front of the hive) that keep everyone safe and comfortable.

Q: How often are hives serviced?

A: We visit every hive approximately every two to three weeks during the active season (spring through fall), and less often in winter. During these visits, we check on the health of the colony, look for pests or disease, add space when needed, and make sure everything is balanced and thriving. You’ll receive a simple update after each visit so you know what’s happening inside your hive.

Q: What if someone in my family or a neighbor is allergic to bees?

A: That’s a very important question, and we take it seriously. If anyone with regular access to the hive area has a known, severe allergy to bee stings, a hive may not be the right fit for that property. That said, many people with mild allergies still host hives without issue by keeping the hive in a more secluded part of the yard and establishing clear boundaries around it. We’re happy to help you assess your specific situation and decide what makes sense for your home.

Q: Can my kids and pets be outside safely?

A: Yes, with normal precautions. Kids and pets can play in the yard as long asthey’re not standing directly in front of the hive entrance or trying to handle the equipment. We’ll show you exactly where the safe zones are. Thousands of families host hives without incident, and yours can too.

Q: How do I know the bees won’t bother my neighbors?

A: We strategically face hive entrances toward fences or walls, which directs the bees’ flight path up and over people’s heads. We also talk with you about simple placement tips that keep bee traffic away from property lines and outdoor living areas. Most neighbors never notice the bees — but they do notice the flowers.

Q: How much space is needed for a hive?

A: Less than you might think. A single hive needs about four to five feet of clearance around it for you to walk comfortably and for us to work. The ideal spot is tucked along a fence line or at the edge of your yard, with the entrance facing away from high-traffic areas. If you have a small patio or a narrow side yard, we can work with that, too. We’ll help you choose the best location during your site visit.

Q: Do I own the bees?

A: No — and that’s by design. You’re not becoming a beekeeper; you’re becoming a loving host. We place and manage the hive, provide the bees, handle all the maintenance, and harvest the honey. You get the joy of supporting pollinators, supporting your community, watching the hive come to life, and enjoying a share of the harvest (if you choose a honey-share plan). The bees are ours; the sanctuary is yours.

Q: How much honey will we get?

A: That depends on the season, the weather, and the strength of the hive. A healthy colony in South Florida can produce anywhere from 20 to 40 pounds of surplus honey in a good year. If you’re on a honey-share plan, you’ll receive a portion of whatever the hive produces, but even in a slower season, you’ll still get to enjoy the knowledge that your backyard is making a real difference for local pollinators.

Q: What neighborhoods do you serve?

A: We currently serve Miami, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, Pinecrest, and surrounding areas. If you’re just outside one of these neighborhoods, reach out anyway — we’re happy to see if we can make it work. We’re slowly expanding our service area as we grow, so even if we don’t reach you yet, we’d love to put you on our list for when we do.
